Indira Gandhi is elected Prime Minister of India - 1966.
On January 19, 1966, Indira Gandhi (1917-1984) is elected Prime Minister of India. Daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru, who ran the country from independence in 1947 until her death in 1964, was the first woman to hold the post of head of the Indian government. I was not related to Mahatma Gandhi; but the surname of her husband Feroze Gandhi, who had changed his surname to "Gandhi" for political reasons. He was a brilliant politician, strategist and thinker, had great political ambition, one of his motto was "end poverty". As a woman and occupying the highest position of government in a society that was still quite patriarchal at the time, Indira was expected to be a minor leader, but her actions proved otherwise.
